Did you know that a Starfish is technically NOT a fish? They don’t have gills, scales or fins like a fish does, so marine scientists call them sea stars. But we’ll stick with Starfish :).
National Geographic tells us that there are about 2,000 species of starfish living in ALL the world’s oceans. The ones with 5 arms are the most common of course, but there are others that have 10, 20, even 40 arms! Wowza! Starfish can be a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, but they all look like a star.
They don’t have a tail to propel themselves like fish do, instead they use hundreds of tube feet that are located on their underside.
Wanna know another crazy and somewhat gross fact about starfish? Starfish have the INCREDIBLE ability to eat their prey outside of their bodies! They use their tube feet that have tiny suction cups to pry open oysters or clams. Then their stomach comes out of their mouths, yes you read that right, out of their mouths and oozes inside the shell. The stomach surrounds the prey, digests it, and then draws itself back into the body. Thanks so much National Geographic, for the lovely image.
