Batchelder Tile Sign

Ernest Batchelder was an American artist and educator. He lived in Southern California in the early 20th century and was a huge influence on the architectural look of that area. He is most famous for creating a style of art tiles that are today associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement. One of Batchelder’s most famous projects was the Hershey Hotel in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This hotel was built in 1930 by the Hershey chocolate manufacturer as a way to give jobs to many local residents who were unemployed during the Depression. The hotel included Batchelder tiles on the walls, floors and stair risers of the famous Hershey fountain room.

Some of the most common characteristics of a Batchelder tile include a neutral color palette such as think browns and tans, and square tiles that often feature animals, birds, flowers and rosettes.
